“ There is no friend as loyal as a book,” said Ernest Hemingway, the American novelist. Undoubtedly books help us a lot in self-improvement. But deciding which book to pick to help improve your English can be a tough task as there are millions of books to choose from. So the question again is, which book to choose from? Well, I would suggest going with the popular titles in your preferred category. Many would argue that popular titles are too difficult. But I can hardly agree with them. Popular titles are the ones, who cater to the large audience and hence they are popular. As they cater to a large audience, there English and writing style is kept simple, so wider audience can understand it. This makes them perfect option for the people who want to improve their English.

So which books to read?

Let’s discuss some of the books which anyone can pick up to improve their English:

1st to Die by bestselling author James Patterson: If you are into thriller and suspense then this book will interest you. It’s the first book in the ‘women’s murder club’ series and is about four friends, each one having a different job, combining their skills to solve toughest murder cases in San Francisco.    

Why do I recommend it?

What’s best about the book is it’s easy to understand, and you don't have to open a dictionary alongside the book. Also, it’s written in such enthralling way that you will not be able to set the book down easily.

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher: This New-york bestseller and the award-winning book is a definite read. You must have heard about the Netflix series Th1rteen R3asons Why. If you don't know then let me tell you that it is based on this novel. There is no introduction needed for the novel but let me just run you through it. It is a high school student, Clay Jensen, and his friend Hannah Baker. After many demoralizing circumstances by select individuals at school, Hannah commits suicide. She leaves behind a box of recorded cassette tapes giving thirteen reasons why she ended her life.

Why do I recommend it?

It is a great book for ESL learners as the story is based on current and writer has used simple grammar with short sentences and relatively easy vocabulary.

I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella: You might not be in suspense and love to read romantic novels. This might not be for you. Here goes the summary of the novel.

Poppy Wyatt loses her engagement ring, which was in her fiance’s family for three generations. Above all, she ends up losing her phone too. To be in touch, she keeps a phone which she finds in a trash bin. Now the owner of the phone, a businessman, wants it back.

Why do I recommend it?

The book is written from the first-person point of view. Very relatable, funny and engaging which makes it easier to read and follow.

The Girl with All the Gifts by M. R. Carey: None of the above interests you? Is science-fiction your thing? Go for this novel!

Humanity got infected by a variant of the fungus. And a girl has special powers because of which she is treated like a lab rat and being researched upon.

Why do I recommend it?

As the story is told from a young girl's point of view, it’s writing is simple and easy to understand. Also, everything is happening in the present tense which keeps your focus on the strange plot.

Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell: If you want something that is non-fiction and that can be useful to you then have a look at this novel.

The book is about what makes anyone successful? Drawing focus towards the importance of environment into the same.

Why do I recommend it?

It’s a great book for people who like to learn about how people work and doesn’t mind advanced English which can also help in polishing your English speaking skills.
