Mahad Asim from Pakistan: Studying Business Management at Trinity Valley Community College

Why did you decide to study in the USA?

It was a dream to be studying abroad and living independently. To be able to do that in the USA is a pretty amazing experience! I have been here before, have family here and the opportunity to succeed attracted me to come here.

Why did you choose Trinity Valley Community College?

The major factor was the affordable cost and the residential facilities available. The town is small and connected, so it really gives me a feeling of belonging.

What do you like best?

The sense of community and the supportive environment is what I like best.

What do you miss most?

Of course my family, my car, the food! And my friends and my high school.

What was your biggest surprise?

The biggest surprise was how big the sodas and food are here, and how everyone is confined into a bubble!

... your biggest disappointment?

No ‘Halal’ food in Athens, Texas.

How have you handled:

... finances?

I had to find jobs on campus, save money and be smart about expenses.

... adjusting to a different educational system?

I have done surprisingly well here, as the system thrives on creativity and personal input.

What are your activities?

President of the Student Government Association; member of Red Birds organization (a leadership group on campus); and Phi Theta Kappa.

How easy or difficult was making friends?

Honestly, it was a little difficult as people here are quite hesitant in approaching new people. It was tough.

How relevant is your U.S. education to your personal goals and to the needs of your country?

Probably start my own business, but whatever I do, the aim would be to benefit those around me.

What is your advice to other students who are considering a U.S. education?

If you have the opportunity to study in the U.S. make sure you make the most of it and try to improve and learn everyday!
