Isabel Martinez from Ecuador: Majoring in Marketing and Communication Studies Manhattanville College in New York

Why did you decide to study in the USA?

I decided to study in the USA because the best way to learn a foreign language is to go to a foreign country.

Why did you choose Manhattanville College?

Manhattanville College has shown me to embrace my culture; with just simple conversation you can gain insight into a new world. They offer a variety of support services and cross-cultural programs, including tutoring, advising, career planning, study skills and counseling—many of which are designed specifically for international students.

What do you like best?

I love that people take the time to listen and note some details about yourself and your way of learning. Manhattanville’s faculty makes me feel valued everyday, as they know exactly who I am. The small community has allowed me to surround myself with like-minded individuals who will motivate and bring the best out of me.

What do you miss most?

Family, friends, and the food!

How has this program helped you to handle future study at a U.S. university?

I’ve been studying at Manhattanville for more than three years. My English has gotten significantly better both in a classroom and among friends. It is amazing how fast someone can pick-up a language once you live in New York.

What was your biggest surprise?

I was surprised that people are very team oriented. I’ve had countless team projects both in class and at work. I think this is what makes the U.S. a great place for education, because you can learn from each other and people are always willing to help.

... your biggest disappointment?

The food.

How have you handled:

... language differences?

Always have the Google Translator App on your phone.

... finances?

Make a budget!

... adjusting to a different educational system?

Ask questions.

What are your activities?

I am part of the golf team and it’s an unbelievable experience. Playing competitive golf has given me the opportunity of being a team player, as well as meeting people from other schools. Being part of a small team allowed me to get to know each of my teammates very well and be able to look after each other.

How easy or difficult was making friends?

Making friends in the U.S. is very easy because—due to the fact it is such a diverse country—people are open to new cultures and meeting new people.

How relevant is your U.S. education to your personal goals and to the needs of your country?

My career goals are to get a great education in the U.S. and gain new knowledge that I can later apply in my work back in my home country.

What is your advice to other students who are considering a U.S. education?

Go for it!
