Erika Fonseca from Ecuador: Studying English at the American Language and Culture Institute at California State University, Chico

Why did you decide to study in the USA?

Because I want to learn English at the same time I’m getting a degree and because school here is better than in Ecuador.

Why did you choose the American Language and Culture Institute (ALCI) at California State University, Chico?

I chose this program because my aunt lives close to Chico and because I need to improve my English to take classes to Butte College.

What do you like best?

The education is better because the teacher is more approachable.

What do you miss most?

My family.

How has this program helped you to handle future study at a U.S. university?

I have been here for three months and my English has improved. I think I am almost ready to take regular classes in Butte College.

What was your biggest surprise?

I was surprised that an adult at 18-years-old can’t drink alcohol until 21-years-old.

... your biggest disappointment?

I haven’t disappointment.

How have you handled:

... language differences?

With difficulty, but gradually I learned.

... finances?

My aunt and uncle are paying for my education here in U.S.

... adjusting to a different educational system?

It is not much different compared to Ecuador. Here it is more organized and easier.

What are your activities?

I went to Six Flag and Sierra Nevada as a part of the English program.

How easy or difficult was making friends?

It is easy.

How relevant is your U.S. education to your personal goals and to the needs of your country?

I want to be a nurse.

What is your advice to other students who are considering a U.S. education?

I want them study what they want and fulfill their dreams.
