Lui Ngachi from Hong Kong: Studies Business at Bunker Hill Community College

Interview:

An interview with Lui Ngachi from Hong Kong, who is a senior, majoring in Business at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston.

Why did you decide to study in America?

I admired the education system and I also wanted to learn English and to get really involved in the cultural life of the United States. I also wanted to try and find out why the U.S.A. has such power in the world and what makes it so special.

How did you choose your college?

Bunker Hill is one of the best community colleges in the Boston area. The college offers a lot of classes that I can choose from. The school is located directly above the "T" (train station) and it is very easy to get to school, from any location in Boston.

What do you like best?

What I like best is the caring, by all the faculty and staff. It really makes me feel that I am special and valuable. In addition, I like all the opportunities that the school provides. For example, there are a lot of different clubs in the school if you have some good and new ideas the school will provide the resources and help you to form your own club. Last, but not least, I love Bunker Hill because the students have the chance to study abroad with Scholarships.

What do you miss most?

What I miss the most is my family and my friends. I also miss the food back home.

What was your biggest surprise?

What has really stayed in my mind is the freedom that people enjoy in the U.S.A. and the emphasis by Bunker Hill Community College on critical thinking.

...your biggest disappointment?

I would say that I was disappointed by how little some Americans know about other countries.

What are your activities?

I worked in the library as a part-time worker; and I worked in Student Activities and in the International Center as a volunteer when I was needed. I was also one of the student orientation mentors and I worked in the Bookstore as a teller. I am also the Vice-President of the Multi-cultural club and a member of the Asia Student Association.

How relevant is your U.S. education to your personal goals and to the needs of your country?

Right now I do not have any specific career goals, but I do think that I will work in the business field. I treasure the time that I have spent, studying here and I have been changed, obviously, because of my Bunker Hill Community College learning experience. I now have more confidence and self-esteem. I have also become a critical thinker. All of these qualities would be very useful and valuable to me as I move on, in my life's journey.
