Nihal Pantangi from India: Studying Electrical Engineering at the University of Dayton

Interview:

Nihal Pantangi, from India, is studying for his masters, majoring in Electrical Engineering at the University of Dayton in Ohio.

Why did you decide to study in the USA?

Because the United States is known for its educational system worldwide. In my opinion, it is the best as the student is given complete freedom.

Why did you choose the University of Dayton?

I was very much interested in the courses offered at the University of Dayton (UD) and there was the option of doing by BS [bachelor of science degree] and MS [master of science degree] together at the same University. This was a crucial factor in making my decision.

What do you like best?

Independent studies. It enables the student to do deep research and still earn credit for it.

What do you miss most?

I miss the surroundings, the people and the food. But now, I am used to the new surrounding I am in.

What was your biggest surprise?

Freedom. The student is given complete freedom to work on his academics and education. This is something my old system lacked.

... your biggest disappointment?

Time goes really fast!

How have you handled:
... language differences?

There was not much of a language difference as I learnt English ever since I was a kid.

... finances?

My parents are the sole source of finance for my education and accommodation.

... adjusting to a different educational system?

It was tough initially because in this system the student actually learns something at the end of the day. But I believe in hard work. So, it was only a matter of time to get adjusted.

What are your activities?

The school arranged trips to various places like Cincinnati Premium Outlets, Kings Island and Scene 75. There was also an International Festival that is organized every semester.

How relevant is your U.S. education to your personal goals and to the needs of your country?

To work for a multinational company is my career goal. It gives me a big chance to make it happen.

What is your advice to other students who are considering a U.S. education?

If they intend to learn something that suits their interests, then the United States is the best place to be on the planet!
