Woonyoung, who graduated from university in electronics engineering, attends the Intensive English Program at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Why did you decide to enter a U.S intensive English program?

Because Bloomington is great place to study English. Plus, I love this peaceful & cozy place.

How did you choose your English program?

Intensive English Program provides students the right English course for those who want to enter the universities in U.S.A. The classes are small so teachers can give us personal attention to each one of us.

Here at Indiana University you can learn English preparing for different graduate schools during Special Programs such as – MBA Preparatory, Legal English for Law, and Public and Environmental Administration. Twice a year they have a special Business English Progam, too

What did you like best about studying here?

There are lots of libraries on campusand Bloomington is full of kind people. Because of theself-regulation system I had the opportunity to gain independence and confidence

What did you miss most about home?

I miss Korean food, especailly mom-made cusine.

What was your biggest surprise about U.S. life and education?

One of the biggest surprise in U.S.A. is freedom. U.S. education system is more initiative than Korean education system. There are lots of professor’s feedback and interaction.

...your biggest disappointment?

Lack of responsibility.

How did you handle: ...Language differences?

I’m open to every culture and try to respect international students.

...Finances?

My family supports me.

…Adjusting to a different educational system?

It can be new challenge for me. I accept as a positive point of view.

How did your English improve?

Watching TV/ listening to CNN or radio/meet American friends and so on. There are lots of way to improve our English. Find your own best way is important.

What are your activities?

I like to go to sport center on campus. Play basketball & swimming, work-out. The intensive English program organizes events for us, picnics and barbecues and parties. They also have coffee hours to meet Americans. We also travel on “field trips” to Chicago and St. Louis and visit museums.

How relevant is your U.S. English program to your personal goals and to the needs of your country?

I like to be a potential engineer and work in a company with various nationalities. Therefore, U.S. education is very significant for me.

What is your advice to other students?

Be a global player. Don’t waste your time, and enjoy your life!
