Tips for planning a winter break vacation

Once the stress of final exams is over, you might be looking to get away and relax a little before next semester begins. Whether you want to plan a long trip or a mini-vacation during your winter break, here are a couple of tips to help you get started with planning.

Set a Maximum Budget

Be honest with yourself and ask the question upfront: How much money can you really spend on a vacation right now? This might be a topic to run by your parents or other close loved ones. By all means, you don’t want your peaceful getaway to leave you stressing out over debt once you return. Be reasonable in setting some practical parameters around your budget to ensure that you don’t come back home with any unnecessary financial burdens.

Pick your Destination

Keeping your maximum budget in mind, you can narrow down your options and select an appropriate vacation destination. Does your budget allow you to take that exotic, faraway vacation you’ve been dreaming about, or would it be better to save the airfare and do something within driving distance? Don’t forget to account for the costs of staying in a hotel or Airbnb – not to mention all the sightseeing and dining you’ll want to do. Don’t worry if you need to stay closer to home, taking a road trip or going camping could be lots of fun too!

Make an Itinerary

Once you’ve selected a destination, it’s time to start planning out what you want to do on your trip. Whether you’re flying cross-country to see a new city, or just taking a couple of days retreat on the outskirts of town, putting a checklist together will help you make the most out of your time. What are your must-haves in terms of places to go and restaurants you want to try? Having these things written down beforehand will help you make sure that nothing falls through the cracks!

Time to Unwind

You’ve been plugged in all semester – research papers, emails to professors and collaborations on class projects. It’s time to rest your brain! Try to keep distractions to a minimum while you’re on vacation and be sure you get some proper time away from it all. Resist the urge to use your downtime checking emails or surfing social media too much. Staying in the moment will help you make lasting memories while you’re away and ensure you come back home feeling refreshed.

Taking a winter vacation is a good way to enjoy the holiday break while recharging your battery before classes start again. No matter what you do with your winter break, take time to plan things out and be sure to build in some downtime so that you feel rejuvenated heading into the new year!
