It’s full of events, scenery, and outdoor activities you can experience while you are studying in Reno.

Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe lies on the California-Nevada border, is nestled in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and is just a short 45 minute drive from Reno. It has earned the title of one of the most beautiful bodies of water in the world. With crystal clear blue water, breathtaking views, and a relaxing atmosphere, Lake Tahoe gets 2.7 million visitors annually. Take a break from studying to visit Lake Tahoe’s stunning beaches, ski resorts, and various hiking trails.

Reno National Championship Air Races

Taking place every September for one week, the Reno Air Races attracts more than 1 million spectators and 150,000 aviators from around the world. Known as the world’s fastest motorsport, this event brings together military and civilian air performances that entertain fans of all ages. 

The Great Reno Balloon Race

Reno’s most colorful and impressive events for over the past 30 years, The Great Reno Balloon Races attract a global audience of more than 120,000 spectators. The event takes place every September, when the early morning the sky lights up with more than 100 hot air balloons for Dawn Patrol and Glow Shows. 

Reno River Festival

Known to be the kick-off event for the Reno events season, Reno River Festival attracts more than 40,000 visitors. The event is geared toward outdoor enthusiasts and offers events like yoga, interactive experiences at the Reno Tahoe Adventure Park, live music, food and drinks, the Reno River Roll, fly fishing, and of course, freestyle and competitive whitewater kayaking on the Truckee River.

Mt. Rose

A ski resort in your backyard! Mt. Rose is the local’s ski destination. Only 25 minutes outside Reno, Mt. Rose offers excellent powder skiing in addition to the Mt. Rose Chutes for more experienced skiers and snowboarders. There is something for everyone at Mt. Rose with more than 60 trails and eight lifts, skiers and snowboarders can cover a variety of terrain in one location. If you are new to skiing or snowboarding, or just want to try it out, there are day packages for all levels available.

Artown

Reno is Artown for the entire month of July! Artown is a comprehensive art festival providing more than 500 multidisciplinary activities ranging from art walks, music, theater, dance, visual arts, performances, and much more. Many of the events during Artown are free and provide audiences with a combination of world-renowned and local talents. This festival is one you will not want to miss!

Professional Sports

Fans of soccer will not be disappointed by the Reno 1868 FC. The Reno 1868 is a Division II Major League Soccer (MSL) team that is part of the United Soccer League. Affiliated with the San Jose Earthquakes, the Reno 1868 plays in the Western Conference. Reno is also home to the Reno Aces Minor League Baseball team of the Pacific Coast League (PCL) and the Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Reno 1868 FC and the Reno Aces are at home at the Greater Nevada Field located in the bustling downtown district. 

Pyramid Lake

Located about 40 miles outside of Reno, Pyramid Lake is one of the largest natural lakes in Nevada. The lake gets its name from the limestone rock formations jutting out of the water. Another interesting feature of Pyramid Lake is that it is about one-sixth the salinity of seawater and is home to a variety of animals. Visitors to the lake can kayak, fish, swim, or just relax in the sunshine.

Hiking & Biking

Surrounded by mountains, Reno offers spectacular scenery, breathtaking mountain views, and is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. With more than 100 hiking and biking trails directly in the city, there is a trail for everyone. If you want to venture outside the city for a hike on the world famous Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), you will not need to go far. In about an hour drive you can hop on the PCT and experience the wonders of Northern Nevada and California. 

Hot August Nights

The premier classic car event of the year, Hot August Nights is an event you won’t want to miss! Car and music enthusiasts come from near and far to participate in the weeklong events like the show-n-shine competitions, classic car cruises, drag races, and car auction. You will be amazed by the pristine classic cars, hot rods, and cars of the future, while getting your fill of food, music, and excellent local company.
