Study English at the University of Minnesota

The University of Minnesota has been offering English as a Second Language (ELS) courses and programs since 1968. Since then, we have helped thousands of students from across the globe achieve academic success, advance their careers, and develop international networks of friends.

Teachers in the Minnesota English Language Program (MELP) are dedicated and experienced professionals. They have advanced training in methods of teaching English as a Second Language and have lived and taught in countries all over the world. Curriculum is designed to give each student a rich, integrated experience.

Students receive exceptional individual attention, including an orientation session upon arrival and advising to facilitate the transition from ESL to an academic program. Courses combine intensive language-skills development, experiential learning outside the classroom, and the effective use of advanced computer technology.

The University of Minnesota is one of the most comprehensive and highly ranked public universities in the United States, and the Minnesota English Language Program is proud to offer a rigorous and academically focused curriculum designed to put our students on the road to academic and professional success through English.

Intensive English Program

The Intensive English Program is for students who need to improve their English skills in preparation for study at a university or college, and for those who wish to prepare for the TOEFL.

The Intensive English Program has two 15-week sessions of English study during the school year. Fall semester goes from early September through mid-December. Spring semester goes from mid-January through early May. We offer a seven-week program in the summer, from late June through mid-August.

We offer four levels of English study. Students take 25 hours of classes a week, including grammar, writing, reading, speaking, and listening. Sample schedules and costs for each session are included on our website at www.ccaps.umn.edu/IEP.
