Engineering at Bellevue College

Himanshi Goswami from India is pursuing an associate’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Bellevue College.

Why did you decide to study in the USA?

After performing a lot of research I was able to come to the conclusion that the USA provides the best quality of higher education. The judgement I made was that eventually it will open up numerous productive opportunities, which is just what I need.

Why did you choose your university/college?

Bellevue College (BC) is one of the most beautifully diverse colleges. I chose it because it had my choice of major and the number of resources and activities just attracted me towards it. I was convinced that I would be able to produce a fruitful outcome with my time and energy, at BC.

Have you taken any classes outside your major that you’ve enjoyed?

I have not taken any classes outside my major yet, but I have already planned to take 6 credits of dance. Dancing has always been a part of my life, and I feel like no matter where I am I will always enjoy it. So, to answer this question I can already predict that I will thoroughly enjoy the dance credits I take at BC.

What were some struggles you faced and how did you handle it?

Upon my arrival to the U.S., I did face a cultural shock. Everything was so different from India. Something that really helped me was the constant courage and power I kept giving myself. I learnt to do the different ‘American’ things, made new friends, explored the city, interacted with as many people as possible, and most importantly encouraged myself everyday to go out there and pirouette through life.

What is your favorite place on campus?

I cannot really pick because I love walking around campus. I feel so good everywhere, but if I really have to pick I would go with the Bellevue College Fountain area. I love looking at water, so I find that place very peaceful.

What do you want to do after graduation?

After graduating from Bellevue College, I plan to transfer my credits to a 4-year university. I am still contemplating on if I should continue in the Electrical and Computer major or switch to Aerospace Engineering.

What are some of your summer plans?

Something that is on top of my list is planning a trip to India. I would also like to go for an impromptu road trip with my friends (still need to learn to drive though haha!).

Does your university/college organize any fun events you’ve attended or are looking forward to?

Bellevue College organizes a lot of events for its students. We have cultural lunches, game days, and a lot more.

Have you traveled around the U.S.? What were some of your favorite places, or where would you like to go?

I had travelled to the U.S. back in 2014. I went to Kansas City, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. Honestly I enjoyed LA the most, the HOLLYWOOD sign has been stuck in my head ever since. One place that I would want to travel to is New York City. More than anything I just want to soak in the craze and buzz of the city.

What is one of your favorite memories from your time as a student?

Being a student gives us a full box of memories. Every step throws different experiences at us. Some are hard, some are just unforgettable. My favorite time was — and still is — being a Global Leader. The activities and events we put up, the work and effort behind it is so worth it.

Describe your experience in three words.

Worth the wait!

What would you tell students who are considering studying in the USA?

The best advice I could give everyone is to never forget why you are here. Education is an expensive investment but it is all going to be worth it if you put in the effort to produce a fruitful outcome.
