Why did you decide to study in the USA?
I decided to study in the USA because I knew there were better opportunities here than back home. Also, here in the U.S. there are more options such as a greater variety in courses or the ability to do more than one major or a minor.
Why did you choose Manhattanville College?
I chose Manhattanville because it is a small school where I can get to know all my professors and most peers, where I don’t feel that I’m just one more student. Also, one can enjoy the campus life and go to New York City which is 30 minutes away. Something else is all the internship and job opportunities Manhattanville has to offer.
What do you like best?
I love the international community on campus. I have met people from across the world who are now my friends. It’s like traveling around the world without going anywhere.
What do you miss most?
I miss my family and friends. However, my sister also went to this school, so I had family close by. Something else I miss a lot is the weather. Back home, it is always nice and warm outside.
What was your biggest surprise?
The variety in courses. Also, Manhattanville is a liberal arts school, therefore we have several requirements to take, such as courses in arts, foreign language, and sciences. I’m studying economics, but I’ve taken courses in chemistry and ceramics. I believe that students get a better education when learning a little bit of everything.

How have you handled:
... language differences?
I went to an American curriculum private school in Dominican Republic, therefore I didn’t experience any language barriers.
... finances?
Manhattanville offers really good scholarships and financial aid. I have both and my parents help pay for the rest of my tuition. Also, I became a resident advisor, therefore I don’t pay for housing. Something else is that I have three jobs on campus which help me gain experience and earn some money for personal expenses.
... adjusting to a different educational system?
With the help of the different resources on campus, it is very easy to adjust to the educational system. Freshmen have mentors who help them through the process of coming to college after high school.
What are your activities?
I am part of three clubs on campus: UNICEF, Latin Fusion and Investment Club. Also, I am a Resident Advisor for one of the residence halls on campus.
How easy or difficult was making friends?
People are really nice and interested in learning about my background. It is easy making friends here. However, most of my friends are international.
How relevant is your U.S. education to your personal goals and to the needs of your country?
I would like to finish my bachelor’s degree and work in a global leading company in the U.S. for a year. I feel that the education here has shown me the latest technology and information relating to my career. Then, I would like to complete a master’s degree abroad.
What is your advice to other students who are considering a U.S. education?
My advice to other students is if they have the chance, they should do it. Studying abroad is one of the best risks I’ve taken and I recommend it to anyone who can. You’re exposed to people different from you, and to a better educational system. I believe it is worth it!
