As an international student there are so many things that we have to navigate. We have to learn and adapt quickly to a new culture, we need to keep up with and get stay on top of classes. Sometimes we even need to learn a new language, especially if we speak a different one. But the most difficult thing we deal with is the separation from home. There’s nothing that fully prepares you for being away from your family and that initial bout of homesickness that you feel. For me, I’ve been away from home for three years, and, don’t get me wrong, I love New York;. I love the people, I love the diversity, I love everything New York has to offer and what it represents to for me, but it’s been two years since I’ve last returned home to Guyana and I must say I fully miss it.

The spring break time of the semester has rolled around once again and it is the time to relax and re-center myself for the rest of the semester. There’s something about having the room to myself and seeing campus empty that’s a surreal experience. This has been my third spring break and the third straight year where I’ve found myself in my dorm watching comedy and sleeping. Most of my friends hopped on a flight to Mexico, Miami or Trinidad; so while they are on the beach having fun, I’m in New York battling the wind, rain and snow.

I am originally from Costa Rica, a tropical country. The lowest temperatures that we might hit are around 15 or 20 degree Celsius, which explains why I had never seen the snow before I came to the U.S. The first time that I saw snow I freaked out! It is so much fun at the beginning, but the low temperatures and slippery surfaces become really annoying after five months.

Some people play soccer or basketball, while others run or bike. In my case, I like to play collective sports where I can communicate and interact with my teammates; it makes exercising way more fun. Even though I like physical activity just because it is fun, I have been passionate about some sports that have really changed my life.
