My journey at Lane Community College as an International Student

An experience in unlocking boundless opportunities

Hello! My name is Nikhar Ramlakhan, and I am an international student from Johannesburg, South Africa, majoring in Computer Science. I took my first leap into higher education in September 2021 and went to study abroad at Lane Community College (LCC) located in the beautiful city of Eugene, Oregon.

If you are a student dreaming of studying abroad and are eager to embark on a transformative educational journey that transcends borders, I invite you to join me as I reflect on the remarkable experiences and extraordinary opportunities that await you at LCC!

Deciding to study abroad

Choosing to study abroad is an extraordinary adventure, and one that challenges you to step outside of your comfort zone as you embrace new cultures and expand your horizons. When I made the life-changing decision to study abroad in the United States, I sought a college that not only provides academic excellence but one that would foster personal growth and inclusivity. When I considered the above, I landed at choosing LCC which appealed to me to be a welcoming and supportive institution that understands the unique needs and aspirations of international students.

Beginning my studies at LCC

Upon arriving at LCC, I discovered a vibrant and close-knit community that wholeheartedly embraced diversity and celebrated the rich tapestry of cultures represented by its students. From the very first moment I was picked up and greeted at the airport, it was evident that the faculty, staff, and fellow students at LCC were dedicated to creating an inclusive environment where international students like you and me could truly feel at home, despite being thousands of miles away from our families and home countries.

The International Programs team played a pivotal role throughout my journey, serving as a reliable pillar of support and ensuring that I had access to all the necessary resources to thrive academically and personally.

Why I chose LCC

One of the main reasons I chose LCC was for its 2+2 transfer program which allows students to complete their first two years of General Studies, a requirement for most degrees, at LCC and then seamlessly transfer to top-tier universities that LCC has transfer agreements with. Taking the Community College route allows international students to establish a credible GPA within the U.S. system, potentially opening more scholarship opportunities.

I also appreciated how LCC has small class sizes which help facilitate a smooth transition and provide a supportive learning environment which is crucial in helping international students overcome the challenges of adapting to a new education system. LCC is an excellent starting point as it offers a solid foundation and valuable opportunities for any international student pursuing higher education in the U.S.

An amazing opportunity

One of the most exciting and incredible opportunities I had at LCC was the chance to serve as the Student Body President, an elected position. This esteemed position allowed me to actively engage with the college community, represent the diverse student body, and advocate for their needs and interests. I had the privilege of collaborating with faculty, staff, and fellow students to initiate positive changes and enhance the overall college experience.

I also had the opportunity to interact with college administration, community leaders, and Oregon politicians which allowed me to foster connections and expand my professional network. Through these interactions, I gained insights into the complexity of higher education in the U.S. and developed stronger leadership qualities and skills.

Serving as the Student Body President was my proudest accomplishment throughout my time at LCC as I was able to serve a student population of approximately 6000+ students. I oversaw the restructuring and post-pandemic transition of the Lane Student Government Association. I also collaborated with Community Colleges and Universities across the state of Oregon to advocate for student needs and worked closely with the LCC Board of Education and Administration to ensure that students could thrive at LCC

As an international student, you may feel that your involvement and voice are limited, but my role as an international Student Body President challenged this. It is crucial that you do not feel limited as an international student and that you seize any opportunity that is presented to you!

Take the first step — you won’t regret it!

Taking that first step in deciding to study in the U.S. is a difficult one, but I can guarantee you that you won’t regret it! Make sure that you seize the opportunities that lie ahead and strive for excellence. Be the architects of your destinies, realize your dreams, and remember that nothing is impossible. The only limitation that exists is within your mind.

Good luck and all the best in your future endeavors! Go Titans!

Sincerely,

Nikhar Ramlakhan
